2020 has definitely not looked like the year I envisioned it would be - and I'm still coming to terms with that. It’s hard to feel as though you're living your best life when there’s so much uncertainty surrounding us. There have been times when I recognize myself feeling discouraged and often defeated. The current state of the world is enough to leave me in a headspace filled with anxiety and at certain moments – depressive thoughts. Because of this, it is important during this time that I keep myself accountable for my mental health and what I choose to do with my time.
Over the course of the past five months, I have accumulated some tips to keep myself in a healthy mindset. A goal I have tried to maintain during this time is to go for a walk each day. I’ll admit, this has been a challenge for me – I still lack motivation at times to get up and move! Something else that has helped keep me motivated is writing down my goals and plans. I am a visual person so doing this it has helped me a ton. During this time I have thoroughly enjoyed scrapbooking and creating vision boards for myself - it is a visual reminder that better days are ahead.
This is an interesting year to say the least – it has been a constant up and down rollercoaster of emotions. Another thing I tend to do now whenever I feel like I’m having a bad day or week (month even) is to find joy in the little things that make me happy. During these times I tend to feel like I don’t have a lot of control over anything – so by finding joy in the things I do have control over it makes the days a little sweeter. I would recommend creating a list of things you can do from home that bring you happiness or peace of mind! For me this would include writing for my blog or finding a new book to start. Creating a list of these things will help keep you feeling in control in some capacity.
Something that I have had to continuously work at this year is knowing brighter days are coming. In a time of so much uncertainty, it can be very difficult to be hopeful for the future – because of this I try my best to do daily affirmations and practice positive thinking. This is easier said than done at first, but once you get into a routine of altering your way of thinking it becomes second nature. I would encourage anyone who is battling negative thoughts right now to start their day off with a prayer and positive affirmation! I truly believe our positive mindset begins with how we choose to start our day. Make the choice to have a good day – and if things aren’t going your way, know that tomorrow is another opportunity at a fresh start. 2020 has been hard – it has challenged many of us to look within ourselves for our strength, not to seek it out from others. My biggest top mental health tip for this time is: You are your power – this life is what you choose to make it. I choose happiness on a daily basis despite the hardships I might be going through and the struggles many others are facing as well. I encourage you to find the joy this year – no matter how hard it may seem… We’ve got this!
