Fashion Week - the week I look forward to most each year. Prior to last year, the only way I was connected to Fashion Week was through my social media; that's how I stayed updated on all the shows - it made me feel as if I were there. Fortunately for me, I ended up being able to attend Fashion Week in Orlando, FL last year thanks to Melanie Pace. Melanie is a fashion stylist and blogger who is based out of the Orlando area. She has been involved with Fashion Week in Orlando for many years. I now call her a friend and am so thankful for the opportunities that she has afforded me. This time last year I could never have imagined that this year at Fashion Week I’d be backstage helping out with the show. It was an opportunity of a lifetime, a dream come true.
Walking into the Mall at Millenia during Fashion Week in Orlando is wild - the atmosphere is magical. I’ll be honest, walking into the mall prior to it opening and then proceeding to enter the black, backstage curtain that allows entry felt surreal. It was one of those, “Someone pinch me” moments in life. My heart was racing and I couldn’t believe I was about to experience Fashion Week. As I entered backstage, I couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated. So many talented people filled the space and the energy was electric. I was assigned a model and my job for the day was to know what outfit she was to wear for each brand. I assisted her and helped her during every ensemble change. Something about Fashion Week that’s imperative to know is that it’s fast… very fast paced. I couldn't help but be thrilled that I decided against wearing heels. With each look, I had little time to help my assigned model in her next look. It felt like I was running a marathon trying to make sure I grabbed the correct look for the model's next walk. One of the first things my assigned model said to me was, “So are you ready for the rush?” And that’s exactly what it was… a complete adrenaline rush. Nothing in that moment mattered other than getting the models dressed in their correct look, making sure they were styled correctly and looking their best.
As the hour ended, it felt like only ten minutes had passed and I wasn't ready for the day to end. Everyone that day was handling their own task, to achieve something great as a team. By the end of the day, I felt accomplished and ready to take on Fashion Week day two. Each and every model I met was so kind, breaking the stigma that models are superficial. They were all so welcoming, sweet, and thankful for everyone’s help who was involved backstage. Models are indeed talented and work very hard at what they do. There are so many people involved in Fashion Week, people who work so hard to put on the best show possible. The fashion stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, and all of the helpers who make sure the models are dressed in the correct look all work together as a team! So much time and energy goes into Fashion Week and it is a week that any fashion lover looks forward to. I am immensely grateful that I was able to be a part of such a positive, uplifting experience that celebrated everyone and their passions / dreams. Being surrounded by so many creative people fills my heart with joy. I want to thank Melanie Pace for giving me this opportunity, and for being the ultimate Girl Boss who shows females that they can achieve anything they set their mind to with hard work and dedication.
